No longer will you be troubled to cook your own meals or scavenge for healthy options on a menu when hungry! We’ve rounded up our top pick of eateries for the health-conscious looking to sample Bahrain’s fresh, healthy dining.
Whatever your regimen, we’ve got you covered.
Whether you’re coeliac or exploring alternative grains, there are a number of kitchens and menu options that cater to your needs.
Check out Maki, located in the World Trade Centre in Manama, which has a separate cooking area for its gluten-free dishes to avoid cross-contamination. As luck would have it, most Japanese cuisine, excluding soya sauce, is gluten free anyway. Maki offers modified recipes of treats like brown rice flour-battered tempura and sushi sans soya sauce.
Located opposite of Saar Cinema, Villa Mama’s is also a great restaurant owned by Bahraini restaurateur Roaya Saleh, with a separate gluten-free menu. Gluten free bread on request? Yes please! Known for its use of fresh, healthy and locally-sourced organic Bahraini menu, Villa Mama’s has enticed London as well, having opened a Chelsea restaurant in 2017. Whether you are in the UK or right here in the Gulf, you can’t pass on mouth-watering royal tagine, juicy qaliat prawns, or, for the kids, fish goujons. Gluten free dessert options are available as well.
Both a restaurant and a tearoom, The Orangery, nestled in the ground floor of the Palace Boutique Hotel in Manama, serves foul medames and shakshuka for breakfast, berry and quinoa salad for later, chunky chips on the side and more! It’s a perfect blend of the Middle East and its classic English inspiration.
The plant-based movement is growing and growing, and luckily Bahraini restaurants have picked up in the spirit. Many restaurants offer vegan options on their menus or on request, but here are a few where you are guaranteed a herbivorous bite.
The Plant Cafe in Hamala is the first restaurant that should be on any vegan’s list, first because it is Bahrain’s first 100% plant-based restaurant, and second because vegans should be able to enjoy comfort food like delicious burgers, mac-and-cheese and yummy ice creams as much as omnivores do.
Raaw is an earthy cafe and juice bar in Saar that is green, clean, and super Instagrammable if you ask us. Why yes, I would like my smoothie in a bowl. Matcha pudding with a chia seed base? Absolutely! Snickerdoodle cookies that are paleo too? Is this heaven?
Green Bar Cafe in Riyadat mall is the offshoot of Green Bar Inc, a small luxury botanical skincare bar. The menu can be rotational but expect soaked quinoa, soaked black rice, hemp seeds, kale, and the list goes on….Just like Green Bar skincare products, these ingredients are organic, locally sourced where possible and satisfying for mind, body and soul.
Keto or Paleo
You can be searching for high-fat, low carb meals or the food of the cavemen – in either case, you’ll be wanting to find salad greens, fresh veggies, and lean proteins; you’ll definitely be avoiding sugar in at least some quantities.
Cantina Kahlo in the Ritz Carlton makes for fun, flavourful Mexican cuisine within its vibrant colourful walls. While you may want to check the dish on the menu first to request they remove ingredients like cheese, chickpeas and/or corn, you can still enjoy guacamole, meat ceviches, smoky black tiger prawns and salsa verde, either to share or to devour on your own.
Most of the beef, chicken and seafood main courses by Fit Kitchen will be grilled and come with a side of vegetables, so they are well-balanced and fit perfectly into your meal plan. Personal trainers eat from Fit Kitchen, so why shouldn’t you? They also offer creative dishes on request such as zero carb Mexican chicken with avocado on the side, and pastas measured by macros. Fit Kitchen has branches in both Riffa and Busaiteen, but as a meal prep service they can also deliver to your door, office, and even your gym – so pause and look around the next time you’ve finished working out and you’re racing to your car!
Lastly, Elevation Burger is the burger pit stop you always wanted for a lettuce-wrapped organic meat patty and diet soda – cheese is up to you. Easy, simple and satisfying – a little reward for all your hard work. Find locations in Seef Mall, Wadi Al Sail, Busaitan, Riffa and West Riffa.
The next time your friend wants to meet for a meal, you won’t have to watch them enviously over a bowl of cucumber salad. Who said socialising and eating clean can’t go together?
